13 Ways to Enhance your Interior Design with the 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year

Pantone inspires brands and individuals all around the world through the universal language of colour. Each year, they announce their ‘Colour of the Year’, which forecasts trends in fashion, interior design, graphic design, retail and product design.

The 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year is Viva Magenta (PANTONE 18-1750); a bold, vivacious shade descending from the red family.

“Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. This year’s Colour of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.”

So, how can Viva Magenta be harnessed in home design and interiors?

According to Pantone, “Daring designers can harness the full power of the Colour of the Year as a velvet couch or lacquered wall. Those who desire a more neutral home can use it as a pop of colour. As a sculptural Murano glass lighting fixture or striking ikebana floral arrangement punctuating an all-neutral dining room, or a glowing abstract canvas or NFT projection in a white entry-way, Viva Magenta packs a lot of drama in a small dose.”

Whether you’d like to incorporate Viva Magenta or another bold shade throughout your home’s interior design, here are some ideas to add drama and decadence with colour:

  1. Create a feature wall with paint or wallpaper.

  2. Add colour through scatter cushions in the living room or bedrooms.

  3. Hang bold and colourful artwork.

  4. Add a statement couch, armchair, ottoman, bedhead or rug.

  5. Upcycle an old item of furniture into a bold statement piece with vibrant paint or upholstery.

  6. Create a photograph mural with colourful picture frames.

  7. Add lampshades with vivid prints and colours.

  8. Incorporate décor items that share a similar theme or hue, such as pot plants, ornaments, coasters, vases and photo frames.

  10. Add layers of curtains – with one being an intense colour.
